Leadership in a Complex World:

+ Theme

The theme for AUS 2021 was ‘Leadership in a Complex World: Managing the Dilemma of Growth’.

Growth has always been one of the cornerstones of society, particularly on the economic and technological fronts, but this pursuit has inevitably caused the accumulation of trade-offs in other aspects.

Through AUS 2021, we aimed to explore innovative ways of creating positive-sum solutions where growth need not compromise other areas. To expand participants' thinking processes further, we also encouraged them to consider potential disruptions and contemplate the way it affects the nature of the problem and solutions that have been proposed.

+ Overseas Leg

The Summit Theme sets the broad agenda for both the overseas and Singapore legs in order to provide unity across the two parts of AUS. Each host university is encouraged to then develop their own Summits around a particular topic relating to the theme.

The Overseas Leg is intended to provide insight about the different challenges of growth that other countries face, from issues of data security and privacy to the need for inclusive education, as well as youth unemployment.

Overseas Host Universities:

  • Zhejiang University - "Where Technology Meets Life: Mobile Payment and Data Security"
  • Lady Shri Ram College for Women - "Education as India’s Path to Inclusive and Equitable Growth: Dilemmas and Solutions"
  • National University of Malaysia - "Youth Unemployment and Personal Development in Malaysia & Asian Countries"

+ Singapore Leg

After getting a broad overview of the dilemmas of growth in other countries during the Overseas Leg, participants were required to work in pre-assigned groups in the Singapore Leg of AUS 2021 which focuses on the sub-theme, "Fostering Inclusivity". This segment involves each team identifying areas where vital elements of a healthy society (cultural, environmental and so on) have been conceded to achieve substantial growth. Teams were also required to come up with possible measures or solutions to minimise these trade-offs and achieve inclusive growth.
